Jazz at Brown

Jazz at Brown has a history as old as the style itself. Alumni who played with earlier Brown Jazz groups include Red Balaban, ’51, former owner of Eddie Condon’s and Jimmy Ryan’s Jazz Clubs in New York, trombonist Stan Vincent, ’57’ of the New Black Eagle Jazz Band.

In recent years,  the Jazz program at Brown has grown to include instrumental instruction, courses in history, transcription and analysis, composition and arranging, and improvisation, an eighteen member big band, and combos, all available for academic credit.

Jazz musicians of the highest caliber such as Associate Professor Dana Gooley, Ed Tomassi, Ron SanFilippo, Paul Mason, Dave Zinno, Bill Vint, Francisco Pais, Yvonne Monnett, and Paul Kolesnikow teach these courses and offer private instruction in our Applied Music Program.

Jazz Meeting and Jam

There is an important meeting in September each year, on the first Thursday of the fall semester in Fulton Rehearsal Hall for anyone interested in Jazz performance. Audition materials are distributed and audition sign-up instructions are given at this meeting. A jam session immediately follows the meeting. Bring your instrument!

Jazz Auditions

All Jazz performance auditions (Jazz Band, Combos, Applied Music Program—including Jazz Vocal auditions) will be held during the first week of the fall semester. Auditions for all instruments consist of playing the prepared piece (2 to 3 minutes of a jazz head or transcribed solo), scales, sight reading and improvising on the blues changes (accompanied by a recording of a rhythm section). Jazz vocal auditions: bring a copy of a lead sheet, transposed to your key, for any medium tempo, swing jazz standard.
